In Massachusetts, Man arrested on allegations of child abuse | Shaken Baby Syndrome

A man was reportedly arrested on Friday (Oct. 5) in connection to allegations he abused his infant and may have shaken her.  Following an investigation into the allegations, Michael Diehl, 30, was charged with child abuse causing substantial bodily harm.
Officers from the Winnemucca Police Department responded to the baby’s home after a report to the Humboldt County Dispatch that the baby had been crying for more than two hours. The report also included information the baby may have been shaken.
At the residence officers met with the mother and father of the baby. The mother indicated she was notified by a friend something might be wrong with the baby, so she came home to check on her.
During the investigation, Diehl jumped from a second story window, onto a car below, and fled the scene.
The baby was taken to Humboldt General Hospital for an evaluation.
Diehl was subsequently apprehended, arrested and charged with child abuse with substantial bodily harm, causing in excess of $2,000 in damages to a vehicle, resisting/delaying a peace officer, and disorderly conduct.
Bail was set at $127,000.
The investigation is ongoing.

In Massachusetts, Mass. man held on high bail in injured baby case | Shaken Baby Syndrome

A 22-year-old North Attleborough man has reportedly been held on $100,000 bail after pleading not guilty to injuring his friend's 1-month daughter he was babysitting.

Authorities say Matthew Johnson reportedly caused injuries to the baby earlier this month including a brain injury, bruises and six rib fractures. A doctor told police the injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Johnson told investigators he reportedly tripped over a child's toy and accidentally dropped the child, causing the injuries.

Johnson's girlfriend, Eden Beauregard, was also reportedly helping care for the child and is facing a charge of permitting substantial injuries to a child and reckless endangerment of a child.

The baby reportedly remains hospitalized.

In Massachusetts, Lynn dad gets 9 to 12 years for shaking baby | Shaken Baby Syndrome

Superior Court Judge Howard Whitehead sentenced a Lynn man to nine to 12 years in state prison Tuesday morning after the defendant was convicted Monday of violently shaking his then-infant baby during an incident in July 2009.

"As of this moment, the defendant has never shown any remorse for what he did," Assistant District Attorney Kate MacDougall said during the hearing. "It's hard to imagine a more vulnerable victim and a more sacred relationship to be violated."

Whitehead imposed the sentence after hearing MacDougall's argument that Jose Aquino, 29, "violently shook" his then 2-month-old daughter Elliany for what doctors testified had to be a minimum of one minute. The abuse caused serious and permanent brain injuries and vision damage, and a portion of the child's skull had to be removed to relieve swelling.
