In California, Shaken baby training in Tehama County | Shaken Baby Syndrome

A new program is in place in Tehama County. Tehama County's Hope and Faith now has a program to provide education and prevention measures against Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Though they aren't real infants, Tehama County's Hope and Faith are teaching many about the dangers of Shaken Baby Syndrome.

The size and feel of 2- to 4- month-old babies, the dolls are among the county's six simulator dolls that have see-through heads that light up when the dolls are shaken to the point that would seriously harm a living child.

Public health nurses Linda Rose and Sharon Bradac-Clendenen brought Hope Monday to Red Bluff Union High School as part of a training for students in the ROP Child Care and Education program.

At least a dozen students, who spend time all year working in area schools as part of the program, were given a lesson on how to teach others about the dangers of Shaken Baby
Syndrome.

In Hawaii, Baby homicide victim suffered his skull, brain injuries a year ago | Shaken Baby Syndrome

A 14-month-old homicide victim reportedly suffered his head injuries nearly a year ago and had been fighting to stay alive ever since.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office identified the baby as Zayden Lonergan.
Kulana Malama in Ewa Beach provides long-term care for medically-fragile children, some of whom require ventilator support to stay alive. It's where 14-month-old Zayden Lonergan had been receiving specialized care after suffering skull and brain trauma.
Sources familiar with the case say the injuries were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
"Their brain often is traumatized by just shaking," Howard Klemmer, MD, emergency room physician, said. "They can get tears of the vessels in the brain. The brain can bounce back and forth in the cranial vault, causing traumatic injury and bleeding internally."
Dr. Klemmer did not treat Zayden, but is familiar with the injuries associated with shaken baby.
Military officials reportedly say the baby was taken unconscious to the federal fire station at Marine Corps Base Hawaii and then transferred to Castle Medical Center in March of last year.

In Washington, Nanny’s attorney asks for trial delay in baby’s death | Shaken Baby Syndrome

Kelli Anne Jacobsen, is reportedly charged with first-degree manslaughter. The charges include aggravating circumstances that the victim was particularly vulnerable and incapable of resistance, and that his death had a destructive and foreseeable impact on others.
Jacobsen was reportedly the nanny for Ryder Morrison, who died June 22. She is accused of reportedly causing a fatal head injury to the boy while watching him at his Richland home. Ryder’s death came a day after his first birthday.
Tawney Johnson, the boy’s mother, had reportedly stopped home for lunch and was back at work by noon.
Jacobsen reportedly called 911 at 12:14 p.m. saying the boy had just fallen down and his eyes were rolling back in his head. She told Richland Fire Department medics that Ryder was standing on a toy that was 6 inches high and fell and hit his head, according to court documents.
The lawyer for a woman reportedly charged in the death of a 1-year-old Richland boy asked to delay the trial seven months while he consults with a “shaken baby” expert.
Scott Johnson told a judge Wednesday that his client, Kelli Anne Jacobsen, deserves a fair trial and that includes allowing him time to investigate the allegations and prepare his defense.
Johnson said he was able to find an expert in the field of shaken baby syndrome with help from a University of Wisconsin professor, but the man does not have time to review the case until the end of this month or early April. And then, the expert won’t be available to testify until October because of a backlog of other trials, he said.
“Given the complexity of this case, I think it’s justified,” Johnson said of his request for a lengthy delay.
Judge Vic VanderSchoor said he has confidence in Johnson’s efforts to keep the case moving along, but told him to speak with his expert and see if they can work out an earlier date.

In Massachusetts, Father charged with shaking infant son | Shaken Baby Syndrome

In another sad story, a 2-month-old boy is reportedly fighting for his life in a Boston hospital after his father admitted to shaking the infant and dropping him on the floor Monday afternoon, police said.
Anibal Cordero, reportedly told investigators he shook his son and dropped him, but caught the baby before his head hit the floor. The incident occurred at 1:45 p.m. Monday while Cordero was holding the baby and his mother was drawing him a bath, according to police reports.
The baby is now on a breathing machine at Boston Children's Hospital. He also needed a blood transfusion after doctors diagnosed the infant with shaken baby syndrome, prosecutor Colleen Cashman said.
Lawrence District Court Judge Michael Brooks reportedly ordered Cordero held on $100,000 bail, twice the amount Cashman requested, at his arraignment yesterday. Cordero is charged with assault and battery on a child causing substantial injury. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in jail.

In Michigan, 19-year-old Burton man accused of shaking 'miracle baby' could use insanity defense, court records show | Shaken Baby Syndrome

Zachary J. Robinett is reportedly charged with first-degree child abuse after his girlfriend's 14-month-old baby suffered numerous bruises to head and body, a skull fracture and reported bleeding in the brain.

The baby was found unresponsive after police were called to a home on Feb. 11. The baby was taken to a local hospital.

Court records reportedly show that an intention to assert an insanity defense was filed in Genesee District Court on Tuesday.

Robinett will be sent to the Michigan Center for Forensic Psychiatry to see if he is competent to stand trial, documents show.

Leyton said Robinett was left alone with the baby after the child's mother went to work. It appears to be reportedly a case of shaken baby syndrome, the prosecutor added.

"Doctors are referring to him as a miracle baby," said Leyton. "At first, they weren't sure he was even going to live."

In Oklahoma, Enid man pleads guilty in 2009 death of 7-month-old boy | Shaken Baby Syndrome

A 42-year-old Enid man charged in the 2009 death of a 7-month-old boy entered a guilty plea Thursday to an amended charge of first-degree manslaughter.

Terry Lee Ledbetter was charged Oct. 6, 2009, with first-degree murder in the death of 7-month-old Morgan Stout. Ledbetter was set for trial Tuesday on the first-degree murder charge.

According to a plea form filed in Garfield County District Court, Ledbetter entered an Alford plea to a reduced charge of manslaughter, which is punishable by four years to life in prison.

An Alford plea is a guilty plea, but the defendant does not admit any guilt, but admits the prosecution likely could prove the charge.

Associate District Judge Tom Newby accepted the plea Thursday and ordered a pre-sentencing investigation be conducted before sentencing April 25. There is no agreement with prosecutors, and Newby will sentence Ledbetter at the April hearing.

Stout was in Ledbetter’s care Sept. 29, 2009, when Ledbetter called 911, reporting the boy was unresponsive. The boy was treated at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center and later flown to Integris Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City. The boy died at 5:13 p.m. Oct. 1, 2009.

According to the boy’s doctor at Integris, Stout suffered from massive brain swelling and retinal hemorrhages, and was a victim of shaken baby syndrome. An autopsy  performed by Oklahoma City Medical Examiner’s Office found the preliminary ruling for the cause of Stout’s death was “non-accidental injury
.”

In Florida, Palm Harbor babysitter convicted of manslaughter | Shaken Baby Syndrome

Stephanie Spurgeon, a former Palm Harbor home daycare provider, was reportedly found guilty of manslaughter and will now face up to 15 years in prison after a jury came back with that verdict. Jurors had spent 21 hours reportedly deliberating her fate over two days.
Spurgeon ran a daycare out of her home and on Aug. 1, 2008, the grandmother of 1-year-old Maria Harris came by to pick her up after her first day at the home, to find Harris limp and not acting normally.  Maria died soon after.
During the trial that began with jury selection last Tuesday, confusing medical evidence about “shaken baby syndrome” was presented. The prosecution presented doctors that testified, little Maria Harris had been thrown onto a bed or shaken very hard.

February Organization Spotlight | Miranda Joy Foundation | Amy Raymond

TIPS FOR PARENTS
- If you find yourself at your breaking point with a screaming baby, put the child in a crib and walk away. "No baby has ever cried themselves to death." The parents needs to take a breath. The child will be okay."

- If your efforts at calming a child prove unsuccessful, do not be embarrassed to ask for help. "Pick up the phone call someone Walk down the block and get a friend involved."

- Be certain to have someone trustworthy watch your child if you can "Make sure they are responsible and can handle a child and informed about what to do if a child is crying" .

MIRANDA JOY'S STORY - WRITEN BY HER MOTHER AFTER LOSING HER

My family tragedy began on October 2nd it was my husband's birthday and I worked all day. My husband and my two daughters walked to my work to walk me home. It was suppose to be a normal day; we were going out to dinner that evening to celebrate my husband's birthday. As we walked home, we were talking; my 17 month old daughter (Emily) was happy as could be, and it looked as if my 4 month daughter (Miranda) was sleeping. For some reason, I felt the need to pick up my 4 month old.

As soon as I did I knew something was terribly wrong. Her body was limp, she was unresponsive, and her breathing was shallow. Of course, like any other mother, I was quite frightened and got home with her as quickly as possible. Fortunately for me, my own mother only lives two houses away. Still not being able to get any response, I whisked her over to my mom's house along with the rest of my family. My mom took one look at her we knew we had to call 911.

So I called 911, and within minutes they were there. They took Miranda in the ambulance to the hospital and I went along, still having no clue what could be wrong with her. When I left her at 7:15 that morning, she was sitting in her swing cooing and happy. We arrived at the hospital and they worked on Miranda. All the time, I was standing there with my husband, crying and trying to understand what could possibly be wrong with my beautiful baby girl. I kept asking my husband if anything happened; was she okay all day? He said she was fine that day and that nothing had happened. I was trying desperately to help the medical field with any questions they may have had to help them discover what was wrong with my once healthy baby girl.

Approximately one hour later, they decided they were going to fly her to Hershey Medical Center. My husband and I raced to meet them there, along with the rest of my family. Hours later, when the doctors came in to talk with the family, I was told my baby was bleeding from the brain. Well I was in disbelief; I was told her chances of pulling through this were very slim. The doctors left for a period of time, and I was waiting to be able to see Miranda. Some time later the doctor's came back to talk with my husband and I. They told us that this looked like a case of Shaken Baby Syndrome. I was in shock, because the only people who ever cared for our children were family members, including ourselves.

I spent the next several hours with Miranda, trying to find some other reason for her injury. The next day, a social worker and police came to talk to me and my husband. They questioned me and my husband together, then talked to each of us separately. Four hours later, my husband confessed to shaking our baby girl.

From that point on, my life took a whole new turn. I spent everyday and almost every hour by Miranda's side, praying for God to work a miracle. On Tuesday, October 5 th, we met with the doctors and were told our daughter's injuries were so severe that she would definitely die. I was told that the part of Miranda's brain that was destroyed controlled her thinking, sense of touch, eyesight, & hearing; everything that would make her quality of life whole was flushed away. And of course, with the brain dying there is no such thing as a replacement. So I was told that we had two choices; we could let her the way she was not knowing how long she would live, breathing only by machines and in a coma state; or we could take her off life support and give her to God. They said she would not make it more than 48 hours off life support, probably less.

So on Wednesday, October 6 th, I made the decision that the best thing for my once healthy, beautiful, baby girl was to take her off the life support and give her to God. So on Wednesday evening, we took her off life support. I was able to hold my baby girl then, and had somewhat of a comfort; if that is possible when you know your child is going to die, and there is not a thing you can do to stop it but put it in God's hands.

Miranda, to everyone's disbelief, lasted off life support for almost 7 days. She died in my arms on Wednesday, October 13 th, 2004 at 8 am. So I am now faced with trying to cope with the loss of Miranda, and my family being ripped apart. My husband, of course, can no longer be with us; nor do I choose to have him with us.

My husband has since been arrested for the death of Miranda. He was arrested on March 2 nd, 2005 exactly 5 months from the day Miranda's life was snipped away from her.

I have had almost nine months before writing this part of the story. I have now, through God and the great support of my family, been able to go on with life the best I can. Yes, I have good days and bad days, but just months ago I thought I would never have even a half good day. I still miss Miranda so much everyday. My whole family has been torn inside in some way or another by this. It is as if they have lost a child too. After all, Miranda was a daughter, grandchild, a niece, a sister, and most of all she was a precious child who was not given a choice as to how her life was so suddenly shortened. The only peace I have is knowing that she is an angel now with God, and I know she knows how much her mother loves her and will never stop loving her or remembering her.

So now, almost 9 months later, with my brother's strong will to get this foundation off the ground, we are starting the Miranda Joy Foundation to enable us to help with and educate about domestic violence and Shaken Baby Syndrome; to keep Miranda's name alive and to bring some sort of sanity to what has happened in our lives.

I want to thank you for visiting our website, and if you choose to help support us in our efforts, I thank you for that from the bottom of my heart. No family should have to go through the death of a child and especially the deliberate death of a child. May peace and prayers be with you.

Thank you,
Amy Raymond

In Washington, Local health campaign to educate public about shaken baby syndrome | Shaken Baby Syndrome

In front of a group of fifth- through 12th-graders at Easton School Tuesday afternoon, Dr. Elise Herman and Public Health Nurse Linda Navarre explained that it's normal for babies to cry, some even for hours at a time. Endless crying can be frustrating, especially for parents who are already stressed, tired or have poor coping skills. That's why it's important to have a plan.
Herman and Navarre were at Easton School as part of a new public education campaign launched to remind and teach people about the dangers of abusive head trauma/shaken baby syndrome, or SBS. The pair plan to visit all the public school districts in Kittitas County to spread awareness.
Shaken baby syndrome is a serious head trauma inflicted when a frustrated or angry caregiver shakes a child, usually to stop them from crying. Shaking a baby can cause severe brain and spinal cord damage, blindness and death.

In a recent report, deputies discovered an 11-month-old infant when responding to a home in Alabama, later identified as Moore, with serious injuries that doctors at a local hospital said were reportedly consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome.
The child was immediately transferred to another Alabama hospital where it remained in critical condition until her death just after 5 p.m. Thursday, Walls said.
"At the present time, sheriff's investigators are working with the Marshall County District Attorney to upgrade the charges," Walls said.
"At this time, the mother and the mother's boyfriend have been arrested and are currently in the Marshall County Jail," Walls said.
"Both have been charged with aggravated child abuse."
Arrested and charged Wednesday were Bridgett Duncan, 24, of 306 Katherine Drive, and Immanuel Gage Allen, 17, of 132 Denise Circle, both of Albertville.

In Ohio, Baby-sitter guilty in death | Shaken Baby Syndrome

In another sad, reported story of Shaken Baby Syndrome, the jury of eight women and four men took less than four hours to reportedly return the guilty verdict of reckless homicide in regard to the March death of the toddler left in the care of Ronald Pheils.  Following the verdict, Common Pleas Court Judge Alan Mayberry proceeded directly to sentencing and reportedly ordered the maximum allowed under statute of only three years in prison.  The 19-year-old defendant from Perrysburg Township Ohio took the stand.  His testimony focused on his actions on the day when the young boy, for whom he was reportedly baby sitting, was taken by ambulance to a Toledo hospital. The boy reportedly died three days later.

Pheils was reportedly mostly calm and collected during his testimony, but choked up and cried during discussion of the victim.  He reportedly said he did not shake the boy and did not injure him.  "I loved him, I would never do that," he said during his testimony.  Though he had only sat for the neighborhood family for a couple of months, he said he loved the young child  "with all my heart" and that he would "give anything" for him.  Pheils reportedly detailed health issues the victim was facing prior to his death.

During the reported testimony, the jury was shown pictures reportedly taken during an examination as well as microscopic images of blood vessels and nerves from the eyes and brain of the victim.  The reportedly definitive final statement was the boy "died of abusive head trauma."
