In Illinois, 12 years for father in shaken-baby case | Shaken Baby Syndrome

Salvador Avila was reportedly acquitted in October of first-degree murder, but found guilty by Judge Gordon Graham of aggravated battery to a child. He had faced up to 30 years.

In February 2008, 3-month-old Sophia was reportedly rushed to Mercy Harvard Hospital by Avila.
She then was flown to Rockford Memorial Hospital, where she reportedly died about two days later in her mother’s arms.

Witnesses for the prosecution reportedly testified that Sophia’s injuries, which included retinal hemorrhaging, increased intracranial pressure and brain swelling, were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
