Morelock Racing Team races to raise awareness of Shaken Baby Syndrome - join the Keane Law Firm in supporting him.

Denny Morelock, Sr., a race care driver and, more importantly, a grandpa - is combining his love for racing and his love for his grandson, Dominic.   Dominic is  survivor of shaken baby syndrome who was shaken at three (3) months of age.   It is the goal of Denny, and his family, to raise awarness of the risk of shaken baby syndrome - and how to prevent it.  He will accomplish his goal by taking his Morelock SBS Racing car to as many car shows, fairs and festivals as his schedule and financial support permits.  Additionally, the Morelock crew hopes to get a petition signed that requires each new parent to watch a  video about the dangers of shaking a baby before they leave the hospital with their newborn.   This is a  great cause, and Denny is a very determined and sincere grandpa.  The Keane Law Firm supports Denny and his cause, and if you can help his team out with a sponsorship of any size, contact him at Kmorelock@woh.rr.com.  Go Denny Go!

Surgeons Place Drains in Baby's Head After Instance of Shaken Baby Syndrome

A two-month old baby whose father admitted to shaking him made it through surgery yesterday, November 19, according to NBC's WOWT website.  Although the infant's grandmother reported that the surgery went well, baby Jayden Roland will remain in I.C.U. at Children's Hospital for a least a couple more days as he recovers from the trauma.  His 17-year-old father, Marcus Bass, was arrested last week and admitted to police that he shook young Jayden because he could not get the baby to stop crying.  In the incident, baby Jayden suffered traumatic injuries, creating the need for serious surgery in which doctors placed two drains inside his head to decrease pressure and swelling.  To help with high medical costs, the baby's family set up a fund in his name.

Surgery is often required after injuries from shaken baby syndrome, among other necessary treatments and invasive procedures.  Abusive head trauma (the newly suggested term for shaken baby syndrome) is extremely serious.  If you have or know a child who has suffered from abusive head trauma, do not hesitate to contact Chris Keane for important resources, answers to your questions, and help finding the best medical experts. 1-888-592-KIDS.

According to the article, father Zachary Campbell told police that he was stressed from lack of sleep caused by the infant's crying.  He reportedly told investigators that he shook his son because the baby was crying.

Shaken Baby Syndrome Facts from ABC Action News | California Abusive Head Trauma Lawyer

Shaken baby syndrome has caught the attention of the ABC Action News crew, who just posted an article on their website stating the facts of the condition as well as how frustrated parents can find help before they take those frustrations out on their children.  Among the highlighted facts on the site are the following:

  • Survivors of abusive head trauma often suffer long-term consequences, including problems in behavior, difficulty learning, seizures, and even blindness.

  • Although symptoms of abusive head trauma range from mild to severe, with some of the more mild cases never being diagnosed, the more common symptoms include difficulty breathing, loss of appetite, lethargy, and irritability.

  • The most common reason a caregiver shakes an infant or young child is a baby's inconsolable crying.

Hospital Joins Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Effort | Abusive Head Trauma Lawyer

Joining the shaken baby syndrome (now formally called abusive head trauma) prevention effort, Salem Hospital in Oregon is providing educational resources to parents of newborns to explain how frequently babies cry and how to handle the tears, thanks to a $26,500 grant from the Children's Trust Fund of Oregon.  According to the Statesman Journal online, nurses and other staff members at the hospital are distributing informational DVDs and brochures to new parents about the "Period of PURPLE Crying," a term used to describe the details of infant crying--how long it lasts, how often it occurs, the age at which it peaks, and other characteristics.  In addition to assuring parents that frequent crying is normal, the materials encourage parents to take short breaks when necessary:  they should not feel guilty for putting a crying baby down for a few minutes in order to calm their own frustrations.

These recent prevention efforts across the U.S. are springing up for a reason:  abusive head trauma can result in serious injuries.  The term abusive head trauma itself communicates the severity of the injury:  shaking a baby inflicts trauma to the head, resulting in a wide range of disabilities, sometimes permanent or even fatal.  If you think that your child may be suffering from shaken baby syndrome, seek medical care immediately.  For free answers to any questions you may have regarding how to receive the best medical care for your baby or what to do in your particular situation, contact child injury lawyer Chris Keane.  You may contact Chris Keane online or by phone at 1-888-592-KIDS.

NY Man Charged After CT Scan Reveals Infant's Injuries Consistent With Shaken Baby Syndrome

A 26-year-old New York man was recently charged by police with child endangerment and reckless assault for allegedly shaking a 10-month-old baby on the Fourth of July, according to the Buffalo News website.  Clarence, NY, resident Jordan Mayne was reportedly at his girlfriend's home when he heard the infant crying and went to the baby's room to check on him.  After realizing that the baby was not acting normal when he was fed a few hours later, the infant's mother took him to his grandmother, who called 911.  Upon administering a CT scan to the baby at Women & Children's Hospital, a doctor reported that the scan revealed injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome (abusive head trauma).  The baby was said to be improving at the time of the report.

"Conscious Fathering" Class Teaches New Dads Parenting Basics, Educates Them on Shaken Baby Syndrome | CA Abusive Head Trauma Attorney

According to the King 5 news website, experts are linking the rise in instances of child abuse this year to the nation's economic state.  A class for new dads in Washington state, however, aims to lower the child abuse statistics and keep children and babies safe by educating fathers on parenting.  The class, Conscious Fathering, teaches the basics of caring for a baby such as feeding, changing diapers, and bathing, but it also focuses on teaching fathers how to take care of themselves.  Dads learn how to recognize the signs of stress and calm themselves down rather than attempting to calm their crying babies by shaking them.  Among the common signs of stress mentioned in the class are a clenched jaw, clammy skin, talking loudly or rapidly, and feeling overheated.

According to the creator of the class, Bernie Dorsey, anyone who cares and loves for children and spends any amount of time around a young child will become frustrated, and preparing fathers for the feeling of being overwhelmed and frustrated gives them more confidence and takes away some of the fears of not doing things correctly.  Dorsey says that 80% of men enter fatherhood without having any significant experience with infants, so it is important to inform fathers that it's okay to put down a crying baby in order to take care of one's own overwhelming feelings.  During the two-hour class, dads are also asked to share shaken baby prevention tips with others who will be caring for young children.

For more information on shaken baby syndrome, feel free to contact abusive head trauma and child injury attorney Chris Keane, who focuses his practice on representing injured or abused children.  If you believe that your baby or a baby you know may have suffered from shaken baby syndrome, the Keane Law Firm will send you helpful resources, free information, and provide free answers to your most important questions.

DVD To Parents of Newborns: Excessive Crying is Normal (Video Aims to Minimize Cases of Shaken Baby Syndrome)

Newborn babies may cry up to 5 hours per day for no apparent reason, and caregivers must understand how to handle babies gently while dealing with their own frustrations.  That's what parents of newborns in Kansas are learning through a new video that attempts to prevent more cases of the devastating but frequently occurring shaken baby syndrome.  In response to numerous recent deaths caused by child abuse in Wichita, city officials announced the "Period of PURPLE Crying" initiative on Thursday, May 7:  a program intended to help parents understand and cope with what seems like chronic crying from newborn babies.  Effective June 1, parents of babies born at Wichita hospitals will be required to watch a DVD about how often, how much, and why babies cry as well as how to handle the frustration associated with the phenomenon.  They will receive a copy of the DVD to take home, along with a booklet titled, "Did You Know Your Baby Would Cry Like This?," both created by the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome.

The video aims to make two things apparent:  excessive crying is normal for newborns, and it is okay for parents to put down a crying baby for a few minutes in order to calm their own nerves.  The word "PURPLE" is used to remind parents what is normal:  a Peak in crying (babies may cry more over time until peaking at about 2 months of age), Unexpected tears (babies may cry for no apparent reason), Resistance to attempts to soothe or comfort the newborn, an appearance of Pain (even though the baby may not be in pain), Long-lasting periods of crying (up to 5 hours per day), and a tendency for more tears in the Evening.

Crying can lead to shaken baby syndrome if a caregiver does not understand the dangers of shaking a baby.  If you believe that your baby may be suffering from shaken baby syndrome, feel free to call the Keane Law Firm with any questions you may have.  Child injury attorney Chris Keane of San Francisco, CA, will answer all of your questions for free with compassion and professionalism.  1-888-592-KIDS (1-888-592-5437).
